The Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (BSc.Ag ) is a four-year undergraduate course that is designed to provide students with scientific knowledge and practical skills in farming, livestock, soil, crops, and agribusiness. 

Nepal, as we have known for as long as possible, is an agricultural country, meaning most of the people in the country rely on farming and other agricultural activities for earning a living.

Eligibility for the course 

If you are someone interested in studying the course, make sure you meet the following requirements: 

• Must have completed +2 in the science discipline or equivalent with Biology 
• Must have achieved a minimum C grade in each subject and an overall GPA of 2.0

Along with meeting the above requirements, you will also be required to pass the entrance examination taken by the respective university to study there.

Course Overview

The course is divided into 8 semesters spanning four years. 

You will learn theoretical knowledge combined with lab work, field practice, and also have the chance to conduct research. 

Expanding a bit more in-depth: 

1. First Year 

The first year, first and second semesters, will build your foundation in science and agriculture. 

You will be taught the basics of botany, zoology, chemistry, and physics, Introduction to Agriculture and Rural Sociology, and also Communication skills and ICT in Agriculture. 

2. Second Year 

The second year is when you encounter core agricultural sciences. 

You will learn soil science and agronomy, plant breeding and genetics, principles of Horticulture and Crop Production, and Statistics and Experimental Design. 

3. Third Year 

In the third year, you will learn applied and specialized topics. 

These include plant pathology and entomology, animal science and poultry farming, irrigation, drainage, and farm machinery, and agricultural economics and marketing as well. 

4. Fourth year 

The fourth year will encompass learning about agricultural extension and communication, agribusiness management, climate-resilient agriculture and seed technology, and weed management. 

You will also have a Supervised Field Work Program or an internship that will provide you with the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and practical knowledge. You will also be required to present a final report, presentation, or thesis.

Scope after BSc. Agriculture

After you have completed the course, you will be able to choose among a variety of career paths. 

Some of the options you might want to know about are: 

1. Entrepreneur:

The first and the obvious one would be to work directly in the field of agriculture. 

This means making a business from organic farming, agri-tourism ventures, and agro-input dealerships. 

2. Government Officer:

If you want a more 9-5 job, you can also work in the government sector in roles of Agriculture officer, Plant Protection Officer, Soil Conservation Technician, and other jobs that are related to the field. 

3. NGOs and INGOs:

You can work with national and international organizations to contribute to improving food security, climate resilience, and rural livelihoods. 

4. Private Companies:

If you lean more towards wanting to work in the private sector, you are offered opportunities in Seed, fertilizers and pesticide companies, agro-vet companies, and food processing and agritech startups. 

5. Researcher and teacher:

However, if you are more interested in academia, you can pursue further studies in  MSc Agriculture with different specializations or a Master’s in Development Studies, Environmental Science, or Agribusiness.

6. Further Studies:

You can also further pursue research in the field or work as a lecturer or trainer at agricultural colleges and vocational institutes.
