CMAT Preparation Guide

The Central Management Aptitude Test (CMAT) is an entrance exam specifically conducted by the Faculty of Management of Tribhuvan University (TU), situated in Kritipur, in Nepal. 

TU states that clearing the CMAT opens the gateway for students from any stream to enter the field of management with subject options including BIM, BBM, BBA, BPA, BHM, and many more. 

It helps to develop essential practical management skills like critical thinking and reasoning, data interpretation, and general awareness.

The following undergraduate management programs offered by TU have made CMAT a mandatory requirement for students to get admission:

1.       Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA)

2.       Bachelor of Business Management (BBM)

3.       Bachelor of Information Management (BIM)

4.       Bachelor of Hotel Management (BHM)

5.       Bachelor of Travel and Tourism Management (BTTM)

6.       Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance (BBA-Finance)

7.       Bachelor of Mountaineering Studies (BMS)

8.       Bachelor of Public Administration (BPA)

10+2 Credentials

A minimum D+ Grade in each subject of Grades 11 and 12 with a CGPA ≥ 1.8

Alternative Qualification

Second Division marks in NEB, or an equivalent qualification in any discipline

If a candidate has completed Grade 11 and is waiting for Grade 12 results, they may apply provisionally.

(Note: Final Grade 11 and 12 certificates must be submitted before final admission.)

CMAT Exam Structure

A total of 100 paper-based objective questions are divided into 4 sections: Verbal Ability, Quantitative Ability, Logical Reasoning, and General Awareness.

1.       Verbal Ability

This section evaluates students’ English skills, including:

  • Vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms, word meaning)
  • Idioms
  • Prepositions, Articles, Reported Speech, Subject-Verb Agreement
  • Reading Comprehension and sentence completion

2.       Quantitative Ability

This section covers a wide spectrum of mathematical problems, including:

3.       Logical Reasoning

This section tests students’ ability to reason, interpret, and evaluate structured information, which is critical for management studies.

It includes concepts like puzzles, symbol coding, series, blood relations, flowcharts, and data sufficiency.

4.       General Awareness

This section assesses your knowledge of:

  • Current International and National Affairs (politics, economics, societal developments)
  • Business and Finance (Banking Trends, stock markets)
  • Science and Technology (Inventions, environmental news, and IT advancements)
  • History, Geography, and Culture (Key historical events, capitals, and cultural highlights)
  • Sports and Awards (Major tournaments, personalities, global recognitions)
  • Organizations and Theories (UN bodies and basic economic concepts)

  • Duration: 90 minutes (1 hour 30 Minutes)
  • The candidates are required to score at least 40 marks to qualify for the examination.

Applications and Registration

To apply, students need to submit an online form by visiting the official website of the Faculty of Management, Tribhuvan University (TU) at:

Students are required to submit/upload the following documents, along with the registration fee of NPR 1000:

·       Passport-size Photo

·       SEE/SLC Marksheet

·       SEE Character Certificate

·       Grade 11 Marksheet

·       Grade 12 Marksheet (if the mark sheet isn’t out yet, upload the admit card)

·       Payment Proof

(Note: Files must be ≤ 2 MB and in the correct format)

  • Payment methods
  • Pay online using ConnectIPS or FonePay, or
  • Pay offline via transferring NPR 1,000 to the Dean’s Office account (Acc. No. 04500100099066000001)
  • Upload the scanned payment voucher, proof of transfer, or bank PDF/receipt into the form
  • If you haven't completed payment after submitting your form, you can pay later via the "CMAT Application Status" portal.

Admit card details and Examination Center

Admit card details will be available on the official website of the TUs’ Faculty of Management after registration. 

Students, then, are easily able to download their admit card and examination center details.

(Note: Remember that the examination centers are assigned based on the student’s symbol number and communicated via affiliated colleges.)

Guide to Prepare for CMAT Examination

1. Understanding CMAT structure

Make yourself aware of the CMAT examination structure, including the four sections mentioned above, timings, and the scoring system, to prepare accordingly. 

Improving your knowledge about these basics helps you better organize your study habits, allowing you to develop a smoother mindset.

2. Acknowledging your weaknesses

Addressing your weaknesses rather than procrastinating gives you more time to work on yourself. 

Working on your weaknesses increases your ability to solve questions more easily and efficiently.

3. Practicing and strengthening mathematical skills

Strengthening your knowledge of mathematical concepts and practicing a variety of mathematical problems helps you enhance your performance in the Quantitative Ability section.

4. Widen your English Vocabulary and skills

To enhance your English skills, get engaged in practicing grammar, reading books and newspapers, and comprehending literary works.

5. Time Management Strategies

Don’t waste your time on tricky questions or questions you find difficult to avoid mistakes. 

Aim 20-22 minutes per section.

Track your pace while staying flexible.

6. Improve your logical thinking and reasoning ability

Solve 6-10 puzzles and brain teasers regularly to build pattern recognition and to boost accuracy.

7. Practice past papers and mock tests

Analyze previous years’ questions to understand the structure and recurring problems. 

Take full-time mock tests regularly to help build accuracy and speed.

8. General Knowledge

Keep yourself updated on current international and national affairs, and keep up with the news channels and the newspapers to stay informed for general awareness.

9. Develop Exam Strategy

Attempt all questions since there is no negative marking. 

Solving questions from easy to difficult helps with time management.

Use study techniques like Heuristics, acronyms, and mnemonics to learn better.

10. Re-read

Read the questions properly to solve them accurately. 

Re-read the question multiple times if you do not understand. 

Also, re-check all your answers before submitting the paper to avoid mistakes.
